24 Tons of Mandarins with Larvae Denied Entry at St. Petersburg Port

Updated: 2025-08-06 00:30

A large shipment of South African mandarins was blocked from entering St. Petersburg due to infestation by fruit flies.

The citrus batch was being transported through the Greater Sea Port of St. Petersburg, but a detailed inspection revealed that the produce was contaminated with pests. According to the press service of the Northwestern Interregional Directorate of Rosselkhoznadzor (Russia's agricultural watchdog), the mandarins arrived carrying larvae of fruit flies. The shipment, destined for a St. Petersburg-based company, had been imported from South Africa.

The spoiled fruits were sent to a laboratory for testing, which confirmed that over 24.5 tons of the cargo were infested. The contaminated mandarins were denied entry in compliance with the Eurasian Economic Union's (EAEU) plant quarantine regulations.

Earlier, Moika78 reported that another similar shipment of mandarins was also banned from entering the city. In total, 42 tons of Argentinian fruit were turned away at the port after live, hazardous larvae were discovered in the cargo.
